What are the technical requirements for using Zulama?

Technical Specs

The following baseline requirements apply to all courses:

Software:

  • Zulama is accessed through a browser. Chrome 20, Firefox 4, Safari 5, and Internet Explorer 10 and higher are supported.
  • Students may need to view, download, and print files, including png, tif, jpeg, pdf, mov, wav, zip, mp3, and mp4.

Hardware:

  • Mac OSX 10.6 or later. Core 2 Duo or later CPU. Minimum of 2GB RAM.
  • Windows 7 or later. Core 2 Duo or later CPU. Minimum of 2GB of RAM.
  • iPad, Netbook, Chromebook, smartphones (functionality may be limited by device capabilities)
  • Each student & teacher has a login, so 1:1 computing is ideal
  • Access to a printer is not required for Zulama courses.
  • A 1GB thumb drive or equivalent disk space is recommended per student per course for file storage.

GameMaker Programming

Software:

  • GameMaker 7.0 or higher. Educational licenses can be purchased from YoYoGames.
  • The screen captures in this course were taken from Windows GameMaker Studio v1.3. Mac screens and earlier versions of GameMaker will look slightly different.
  • Zulama’s Lite version of the GameMaker Programming course can be completed using the Mac version of GameMaker 7.0.  However, Windows GameMaker Standard 8.0 or later is required to complete our full version of GameMaker Programming I and II.

Hardware:

  • Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7
  • DirectX 8-compatible graphics card, min 32MB of video memory
  • Pentium or equivalent processor
  • DirectX 8-compatible sound card
  • 512MB of memory or greater
  • 800×600 or greater screen resolution with 16-bit or 32-bit colors
  • Intel Mac

3D Modeling

Software:

  • Autodesk 3DS Max 2012 (free for education)
  • Microsoft® Windows® 7 Professional, Microsoft® Windows Vista® Business, or Microsoft® Windows® XP Professional

Hardware:

For general animation and rendering (fewer than 1,000 objects or 100,000 polygons):

  • Intel® Pentium® 4 1.4 GHz or equivalent processor
  • 2 GB RAM minimum
  • 2 GB swap space minimum
  • 3 GB free hard drive space
  • Direct3D® 10 technology, Direct3D 9, or OpenGL-capable graphics card (256 MB or higher video card memory)
  • Three-button mouse with mouse driver software

Mobile Game Design

Software:

  • GameSalad Creator (free)
  • The screen captures in this course were taken using GameSalad Creator Version 0.10.5.  More recent versions may be available.  If maintaining compatibility between Mac and Windows is important to you, we recommend using version 0.10.5.

Hardware:

Mac:

  • Mac OSX Lion or Later. Xcode 4.3 with Command Line Tools and iOS Support.
  • Android SDK for Android support.
  • Core 2 Duo or Later CPU required. Minimum of 2GB of RAM recommended.

Windows:

  • Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8.
  • Android SDK for Android support.
  • Core 2 Duo or Later CPU required. Minimum of 2GB of RAM recommended.

Unity 3D Programming

Software:

  • Unity version 4.3 or higher
  • The most recent version can be downloaded from Unity for free

Hardware:

  • Windows XP with SP2 or later; Windows 7 with SP1 or later; Windows 8; Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 or later. Note that Unity was not tested on server versions of Windows and OS X. Windows Vista is not supported.
  • Graphics card with DirectX 9 level (shader model 2.0) capabilities. Any card made since 2004 should work.
